Cultures of Harm

| June 10, 2014

This morning I woke up with a petition in my inbox asking me to sign a petition to stop Female Genital Mutation, what caught my eye were the words “in America”. I knew this was happening in other countries, sometimes I forget that the customs of other nations find their ways into new lands. I imagine this is not a new issue, simply one that was hidden by it’s culture.  I would encourage you to sign the petition, it’s simple and takes seconds of your time. Will the petition alone stop this horrible crime? Of course not, but it brings something dark into the light, we know about it, and it is harder for people to behave badly on a public stage than it is for them to continue their actions protected by secrets and shadows.

“We need to shatter that culture of impunity and make justice not the exception but the norm for these crimes. This evil will continue to ruin the lives of millions of people unless we make this summit a turning point – and we can.” Angelina Jolie at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict.

These issues of systemic abuse towards women are not local problems but global problems.

I always find myself wanting to “do” something not just “know” about something and feel helpless. So today there are three things that you and I can do together:

1) Sign the petition and then post it on your social media and encourage all of your friends to sign as  well.

2) Engage with the global summit #timetoact and let the victims know their cries do not fall on deaf ears.

3) Connect with your local Red Cross Chapter and volunteer with an organization that values humanity above all else.

What I have had to learn is that change takes time. These kind of issues are ones that take generations to die off. It has to be a new part of the culture that this kind of behavior is intolerable.
